How Does This Calculator Work?

This calculator provides a reliable estimate for your move by breaking down the costs into key components based on industry standards:

  • Base Shifting Charge: A fixed cost determined by your home size (1 BHK, 2 BHK, etc.), which covers the basic handling of a standard volume of goods.
  • Packing Charges: Calculated as a percentage of the base charge, depending on your chosen packing level (Basic, Partial, or Full). Full packing for all items costs more but ensures maximum safety.
  • Transportation Charges: This is calculated based on the distance of your move. A per-kilometer rate is applied for long-distance moves.
  • Labour & Add-ons: Fixed charges are added for loading/unloading and any extra services you select, like vehicle transport or unpacking.
  • GST: A standard tax of 18% is applied to the final sub-total, as is standard for logistics services.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do costs vary between different moving companies for the same move?

Costs can vary due to differences in service quality, brand reputation, type of insurance offered, quality of packing materials used, and the type of trucks they operate (e.g., shared vs. dedicated truck).

What is transit insurance and is it included?

Transit insurance covers your goods against damage during transportation. Most professional companies offer it as an optional add-on. The cost is typically a percentage (e.g., 3%) of the total declared value of your goods. This calculator does not include insurance cost as it's variable, but it's highly recommended.

When is the best time to move to save money?

The moving industry has peak and off-peak seasons. Demand is highest at the end of the month, on weekends, and during holidays. You can often get better rates by scheduling your move on a weekday in the middle of the month.
